]]>Camping is most commonly thought of as a spring and summer activity, however, camping in winter is an incredible experience! It is a great way to savor those tranquil moments and settings only winter can provide, such as untouched snow-covered landscapes, early nights and early mornings, and of course a warm, cozy fire. Winter camping does require a little more planning and smart packing, though. To help you fully enjoy your next winter camping trip, follow these tips!
A lot of strategic work goes into finding the right winter campsite:
The best part about winter camping is that it allows you to enjoy numerous winter activities you might not experience other wise. Make the most of it and go cross country skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, ice climbing, ice fishing, sledding, etc. The opportunities are endless!

]]>As of October 19, 2021 the National Interagency Fire Center’s (NIFC) reported a total of 47,602 wildfires across the country that had burned almost 6.5 million acres. While the summer months have the most active wildfires, there is no real defined "wildfire season" and there are still 5,612 personnel deployed fighting active fires.
With the year-to-date average being 49,090 fires burning 6.89 million acres, you might be wondering what exactly happens after a wildfire. To answer this question, we first have to distinguish between the types of wildfires.
As explained by NC State University, there are three types of wildfires: Ground fires, surface fires and crown fires.
Wildfires can occur naturally, either being ignited by heat from the sun or a lightning strike. These types of fires, as well as controlled burns, are often low intensity and remain under-control. These benefit the environment in many ways as it serves as a reset button, with many natural environments actually depending on fires to thrive.
As explained by The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, fire removes low-growing underbrush, cleans the forest floor of debris, opens it up to sunlight, and nourishes the soil, all of which allows established trees to grow stronger and healthier. In addition, fire kills diseases and insects that prey on trees. Overall, after low intensity fires, habitats are nourished and valuable resources such as native vegetation and water is replenished for wildlife.
Unfortunately, as stated by Joseph Roise, a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State’s College of Natural Resources, the vast majority of wildfires are caused by humans. The estimated 85% percent of wildfires caused by humans are incredibly destructive.
Considering the fact that destruction caused by wildfires in the U.S. has significantly increased in the last two decades, special efforts are now often required to prevent future problems. The Forest Service has a post-fire emergency stabilization program known as the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program. BAER teams are staffed by specially trained professionals: hydrologists, soil scientists, engineers, biologists, vegetation specialists, archeologists, and others who start preforming their assessment before the wildfire has been fully contained.
The first step is emergency stabilization. During this process, efforts are made to prevent further damage to life, property or natural resources. The stabilization work begins immediately and may continue for up to a year. The second step is long-term rehabilitation and restoration. These efforts focus on repairing infrastructure and natural resource damages caused by the fire and can take many years. Actions include: planting trees, reestablishing native species, repairing damage to facilities such as buildings, campgrounds, and fences, restoring habitats and treating invasive plants.
To learn more about wildfires, what you can do to help prevent them and steps you need to take to prepare for future wildfires, check out The Forest Service's resources.

The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season is well underway and the NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center states that atmospheric and oceanic conditions remain conducive for an above-average hurricane season. “After a record-setting start, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season does not show any signs of relenting as it enters the peak months ahead,” said Rick Spinrad, Ph.D., NOAA administrator.
We've already had 14 named storms in 2021, equaling the average for an entire year. Hurricane Ida has been the most devastating so far, but all hurricanes pose a risk. With more storms on the way, it is essential that families and communities are prepared for all possible outcomes. To help ensure your family is prepared, follow the tips below.
It is a common misconception that if you are not living near the coast, you don’t need to prepare for hurricanes. However, rain, wind and water can affect even land locked states! Click here to discover your area’s hurricane risk.
Keep in mind that weather patterns can shift unexpectedly, and action may need to be taken abruptly. Make sure that you have an evacuation plan for every location you and your family members frequent outside the home, such as the office, school, daycare, etc. and have a plan for what to do if family members get separated. Communicate this plan with every member of the household so everyone is on the same page and knows exactly what to do. It is also a good idea to have your evacuation plan accessible to everyone through a sharing platform such a OneDrive, iCloud, DropBox, etc.
Gather food, water, medicine, extra clothes and anything else you may need and create a go-bag. Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 delta variant infections, it is a good idea to have hand sanitizer, extra masks and disinfecting wipes/sprays packed as well.
A great addition to your Go-Bag would be one or more GO-KOTs. You never know what the sleeping arrangements at shelters will be, or if you are staying with friends and family, they may not have enough beds for everyone. Packing GO-KOTs ensures you and your family will have somewhere comfortable to sleep at night.
During emergencies and natural disasters, your pets will be even more dependent on you for their safety and well-being. Your family’s disaster plans must include your furry family members too. Remember, if it is not safe for you to stay at home, then it is not safe for them either. Pack all of their necessary supplies, such as food, treats, vet records, medicine, blankets, etc., in your go-bag. Ensure your evacuation route includes a mode of transportation that is pet friendly and have pet friendly hotels saved. If you plan on staying with family or friends, make sure they are aware that your pets will be joining you. To learn about livestock safety during a hurricane, click here!
For more information on hurricane preparedness, visit the CDC or Ready.gov! In addition, for very specific details on hurricane preparedness, such as preparing for extremely high winds, preparing for flash flooding, the difference between a go-bag and stay at home kit, etc., visit the Red Cross!
]]>As stated by McKinsey & Company, the global packaging industry has been enjoying steady growth over the past decade. The driving forces include shifts in choice of substrates, expansion of new markets, and changing ownership dynamics.
However, this growth has led to increased use of plastics and single use packaging waste to replace other substrates and accommodate consumers’ demand for convenience. As a result, plastics and single use packaging waste is ending up in our oceans and pushing landfills to their limit. This is creating a heavy burden on the environment.
Consumers are becoming more aware of the packaging industry's role in the current environmental crisis and are looking to support businesses who are doing their part to drive major changes in consumer packaging. Listed below are a few ways businesses can become more sustainable with their packaging as outlined by Lumi:
1. Use Minimal Packaging: One of the best ways to keep the environmental impact of your packaging minimal is to cut down on excess packaging. The best way to do this is to design your packaging to fit products snuggly, or choose the smallest size packaging as possible.
2. Choose the Right Materials: Choose recycled materials to create your packaging. If this is not possible for your business right now, choose easily recyclable materials for your packaging instead. Make sure to educate your customers on how exactly to recycle the packaging as well!
3. Be Mindful of Void Fill: If you have to use void fill in your packaging, make efforts to maximize its potential for a second life. You can choose void fill made from recyclable materials or even some of your own post industrial waste.
4. Return Trip Packaging: Another great option is to design your packaging for a return trip. You can use easy-to-open features like perforated tear strips to reduce damage and add double adhesive strips make it easy to seal and return. This ensures your packaging can be re-used or recycled properly!
Here at GO-KOT we are working to become more sustainable! When it comes to our packaging for GO-KOTs, we use minimal, right-sized cardboard boxes that have already been recycled or are recyclable. This means we use little to no fill. In addition, we ensure that all hangtags and instructions are created to have a very small footprint.
If you have questions about our packaging or have ideas on how we can improve, comment below!
]]>Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, camping and outdoor adventures have increased in popularity. You may have noticed that there is less availability at campgrounds when you try to make a reservation, and costs have gone up significantly.
Luckily, there is such a thing as free camping and there are way more free camping opportunities in the United States than you might think. The trade off for lack of campground amenities is more privacy, more adventure, and typically more incredible views!
However, keep in mind that at these free campsites, you will be dispersed camping. You will need to be self-contained and be fully prepared and carry in (and out) everything you might need. Practicing good outdoor ethics and following the Leave No Trace guidelines is the best way to ensure these free camping options remain accessible.
BLM Land, while mostly out west, is public land that offers visitors a wide variety of outdoor adventures, including camping! While their website doesn't clearly state where you can camp for free, you can start by looking through their regional maps.
There are 154 National Forests and 20 National Grasslands in the United States, that's 193 million acres of vast, scenic beauty just waiting for you to discover. National Forests and Grasslands really make great dispersed camping options! Just be sure to check The U.S. Forest Service's "Know Before You Go" camping section before planning your trip so that you can be fully prepared.
Did you know that many businesses will allow you to stay overnight in their parking lots? While it might not be the most luxurious destination, after a long day of traveling, it may just be the easy, convenient, and free option you need! This is especially true for those with an RV.
Also, for those staying in RVs or vans, Wal-Mart, Cabela's, Camping World, Cracker Barrel, and even Costco, Home Depot or Lowe's, and some Casinos allow overnight camping. Every store is different, though, so don't just assume you can stay overnight. The best thing to do is call ahead of time and just ask.
When traveling through small towns, you may want to check and see if they allow free or low cost camping in their fairgrounds or parks. In addition, while it is not technically free, Harvest Hosts is a great idea for RVers and van livers. They charge a yearly fee in exchange for access to a large network of camping destinations like vineyards, golf courses, breweries, museums and more!
There are numerous resources out there that can help you find the perfect, free camping spot for your trip. You just have to do a little research! We always start by doing a few Google and YouTube searches, and of course check the BLM and USFS websites. From there, we have several additional recommendations.
Allstays Camp & RV- Tents to RV Parks is by far the best tool for finding the best camping spots. This is what we use and we haven't been disappointed! It is an easy to use app that lets you find and filter places and services with or without internet. It has extensive filters, so you can specify whether you are looking for tents, RV resorts, parking lots, fuel, rest areas, repairs, tunnels, or even inclines. It also allows you to find campgrounds with full amenities as well as the free, off the beaten path campsites. This app does cost $9.99, but it is well worth the money! This is in no way an advertisement, this is just what we prefer using and find it to be the most helpful.
2. Campendium
In addition to their extensive guide to free camping, Campendium offers a search tool for finding free camping spots. Just follow these directions!
Once Canada has reopened to the public, keep in mind that this search works in Canada, too! The best part of Campendium is the extensive reviews on camping spots from previous campers who stayed there!
This is our favorite free option so far. FreeCampsites.net is a very helpful resource whether you just want to find free campsites nearby, or if you are planning an entire free camping road trip! Another reason we like this resource is because it is community driven. While they update the map and add free campsites themselves, they also encourage users to add the free camping destinations they have personally tried.
If you would like to learn more about finding free campsites and how to be self-contained while camping at these free spots, check out Your RV Lifestyle!

It is finally June and camping season is in full swing! There is something absolutely magical about being out in nature again, enjoying outdoor activities and late nights spent around the campfire with friends and family.
Unfortunately, summertime is also when ALL the bugs are out. Don’t let mosquitoes, ticks, flies, gnats or any other bugs ruin your camping trip though! There are ways to minimize these pesky nuisances.
Listed below are the best tips from the KOA, The Geeky Camper and the Mosquito Squad on how to effectively keep bugs away during your camping trips this summer!
While still in the planning stages of your camping trip, do some research into the best gear for dealing with bugs. There are many options that can improve your camping experience! There are a wide range of mosquito nets, canopies, and shelters as well as gear that has already been treated with built-in insect repellent. Other gear investments could include bug-repelling diffusers, head nets, mosquito repelling bracelets, etc.
Protective clothing can do wonders for preventing mosquito bites. Some clothing brands even offer clothing with built in bug repelling technology, such as No Fly Zone®,which can be found on many clothing sites including LLBean and Duluth Trading Co. In addition, you should invest in some light weight, loose-fitting shirts and pants from an outdoor outfitter, as long sleeves and pants are key. According to Mosquito Squad, light colors attract less bugs, so avoid purchasing black or other dark colored clothing for camping trips.
Sometimes, floral or fruity scents can attract bugs. It is best to choose unscented deodorants, hair products, lotions and other daily hygiene products. This will help keep you under the radar from bugs and mosquitoes.
When choosing a campsite, it’s important to consider your surroundings. Bugs love standing water, so look for dry, high ground that is far from standing water. Typically, having fast moving water nearby, such as a river or creek, shouldn’t cause too many bug problems. Once you have established your campsite, make sure to keep it clean. Throwing out your trash each night and properly storing your food in bear boxes or coolers can go a long way toward preventing bug infestations overnight or while you’re out and about.
As soon as you get to your campsite location, build a campfire immediately. Do make sure to check your local ordinances and ensure campfires are allowed in your area before heading out on your trip. As a general rule, mosquitoes and other bugs hate smoke. In addition, you could try putting natural herbs and plants into your campfire. It has been shown that sage, mint, eucalyptus, and rosemary are all fairly effective bug repellents.
Permethrin is an insect repellent designed to be applied directly to your camping gear and clothing. It can survive about 20 to 40 laundry cycles in a washing machine, too! In addition to treating your gear and clothing with this repellent, it is a good idea to also pack traditional insect repellent for you camping trips. Choose the repellent that works for you, whether it’s a DEET-based product or a natural alternative. Just make sure it is waterproof! Between sweating and splashing around in the water, you don't want your protection to wash right off.
In the end, bugs are a part of nature and can't be completely avoided while camping. However, following the above tips should greatly reduce the bugs around your campsite and provide you with a much better camping experience!
]]>Summer is just around the corner, which means camping season is in full swing! On our blog, we talk a lot about all the adventurous outdoor activities you can partake in while camping, such as hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, bouldering/rock climbing, etc.

Camping is such a great experience because it gets you outside, off your devices, and allows you to spend quality time with family and friends. On our camping trips in particular, all of our best memories are made while playing games with loved ones. Listed below are all of our top game choices.
This is one of our all time favorite camping games! It is a four person game inspired mostly by volleyball. We usually do spik ball tournaments on our camping trips so every team gets to play. A deck of cards is an essential item for every camping trip! And for those trying to pack light, it’s the best choice. We have so many favorite card games, some that require their own deck of cards and some that can be played with a traditional deck of cards. Check out the list below!
Kan Jam is made in the USA just like GO-KOT, so we were a fan from the beginning! No matter where you go camping, this Frisbee game is the perfect addition to your packing list. It is another fun and competitive, 4 person game that the whole family is sure to enjoy.
In our opinion, corn hole is a classic camping game and it is always packed in our car just in case. You can truly set up corn hole anywhere, no matter where you go camping. Children and adults always have a blast with this one, so it will definitely be crowd pleaser if you add it to your packing list!
We love Ladder Golf because you can set it up when you arrive at the campsite, and can casually or competitively play throughout the day. You can also play singles or as teams. Just about everyone has played some version of this game, so it is fun for family and friends of all ages!
Another classic game that we play often! Horseshoes is an easy and relaxing game that takes up a little less space than some of the other options we've listed. It is also great for all ages because you can play just for fun, or the adults can make it extremely competitive! If you will be camping near the beach, we definitely recommend this one.

]]>Bitcoin is a software-based online payment system that utilizes a shared public ledger of all transactions. Payments work peer-to-peer without a central repository or single administrator, which has led the US Treasury to call Bitcoin a decentralized virtual currency.
Bitcoins are essentially encryption keys and lines of code stored in a digital wallet. This wallet can either be kept on your own computer Bitcoin Wallet or a hosted Bitcoin Wallet company such as Coinbase or Bitcoin exchange such as Bitstamp These keys are exchanged between wallets in exchange for goods, services, or currency within a market value that follows supply and demand of the currency.
If you are still a little confused, that is completely normal! Luckily, NerdWallet did a great job explaining bitcoin further. They state that fiat money (like the U.S. dollars in your bank account) is backed and regulated by the government that issues it. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is powered through a combination of peer-to-peer technology — a network of individuals, much like the volunteer editors who create Wikipedia — and software-driven cryptography, the science of passing secret information that can only be read by the sender and receiver. This creates a currency backed by code rather than items of physical value, like gold or silver, or by trust in central authorities like the U.S. dollar or Japanese yen.
Bicoin is the world’s first and most popular digital currency. It broke all value records in February 2021 and is only continuing to grow in popularity.
As a technology forward company, GO-KOT recognizes the benefits of using Bitcoin virtual currency. By adding this cryptocurrency to our payment options, we’ve provided more opportunities for our customers and have increased payment transparency and efficiency.
If you have questions about paying with Bitcoin, please call (205) 384-4134 or email us at sales@go-kot.com. You can also click here to learn more about Bitcoin and how to use it!
]]>In addition to the challenges of COVID-19, this has also been an usually cold and snowy winter. If you are anything like us, we bet you are itching to get back outside and enjoy nature again.
Spring is slowly making its way into focus and as soon as all the snow melts, and you might be thinking camping sounds like a great idea. Well, you are right! Spring is often a less crowded time to go camping than summer or fall, and you get to admire the gorgeous transition of the lush scenery. However, the weather can be erratic and unpredictable, and the nights are often a lot colder than we expect! Through preparation is paramount, but spring camping can be incredible! Follow these tips and you’ll be good to go.
The way the GO-KOT® is constructed not only makes it extremely comfortable, but it also keeps you warm by getting you off the ground. Being elevated off the cold, and most likely damp ground, is one of the most important steps you can take to prevent being cold at night.
Invest in a high quality tent and sleeping bag! A 3-4 season tent offers the best protection from rain and wind! When it comes to sleeping bags, check the weather of where you plan on camping. If you plan on camping in early spring and depending on your location, a winter sleeping bag may be a good choice. A 3 season sleeping bag is also a good investment because with typical temperature ratings of 15-35 degrees Fahrenheit, they can handle the cool temperatures of spring and autumn, along with warmer summer conditions. To help you choose the right seeping bag, click here!
As explained by Wilderness Redefined, setting up your tent correctly also plays a role in keeping you warm at night. Avoid pitching your tent pitch your tent somewhere where it will be exposed to high winds or in low lying areas where cold air might settle. Look for natural shelters that provide windbreaks such as trees, bushes or a rocky outcrop and avoid valley floors where cold air and water can gather and flow through. You should make sure that there is ventilation in the tent to allow the air flow to carry moisture out!
You may be thinking spring, but be smart when packing. Depending on where you’re heading (and what the elevation is), snow and ice may still be possible. Add items like a water-proof coat, thermal wear, plenty of socks, gloves or mittens, hats and hiking boots that have sufficient traction for potentially slick trails to your packing list to be fully prepared!
Did you know that hypothermia is more dangerous in the spring than winter? This is because spring is wetter and temperatures often fluctuate so drastically that it can be deceiving to properly contend with. To ensure you stay dry and warm, leave the cotton at home and bring waterproof everything! This includes your sleeping bag, your outer layers, your backpack, your shoes, etc.!
For more information, visit Wilderness Redefined or KOA! In a previous blog post, we also created a detailed spring camping packing list, so be sure to check that out as well!
]]>With everything that happened in 2020 and so far in 2021, you may be thinking a camping trip sounds like the perfect escape. Camping is more than just an escape, though. In fact, it may be just what the doctor ordered! Not only does it allow for social distancing and get you outdoors, but camping has also been linked to numerous health benefits. Keep reading to learn more!
Regardless of what kind of camping you plan on doing, whether it’s RVing, car camping or backpacking, you will be getting more exercise than you would be staying home. Packing, unpacking, setting up camp, exploring and all the activities that come with camping, such as hiking, canoeing, etc., require physical activity. The truth is, when you are in nature, exercise comes more naturally and is generally more fun. Not to mention, physical activity is essential for overall wellbeing.
In our modern technology-filled world, it is a challenge to step away from all of the screens. This is especially true now that many of us are working from home. On top of that, the news and almost all social media channels are filled with negativity. Going camping is one of the best ways to disconnect and take a break from technology. When you combine that with fresh air and natural sights, you will feel the stress melt away. Chronic, unmanaged stress can have detrimental effects on our health and lead to burnout. So, whether you choose camping or another activity, some sort of stress management is absolutely crucial.
Other than a few s’mores, typical camping food is very healthy. Examples include, oatmeal, fruit, vegetables, granola, trail mix, sandwiches, fish, potatoes, etc. In addition, when you are active and spend a majority of your time outdoors, your body will naturally crave healthy and nutritious foods. While this will certainly boost your health during the camping trip, the real benefit is recognizing how much better you feel. Actively acknowledging how exercise and nutritious food benefits your body can help you create long lasting healthy habits in your everyday life.
You’ve probably noticed on days that you workout and eat healthy, you’ve slept better. The same is true when camping! When you’ve had a busy, active day and eaten regular meals and snacks, you set your body up for a restful night’s sleep. In addition to that, you aren’t on your phone, staring at a television, or sitting under artificial light all day. This allows your body to return to its natural circadian rhythm. There are a few requirements to achieve your best nights sleep while camping, though. We recommend some sort of pillow, a sleeping bag with the correct temperature rating, and of course, a GO- KOT to get you off the cold, hard ground!
Whether it is with family members or friends, strong social connections are essential for your health. With busy schedules and daily stressors, quality time with family and friends is limited. When camping though, you are given the opportunity to truly connect with each other and experience the benefits of quality time. Everything from setting up camp, cooking and eating meals, exploring, sharing stories, and more is done together without the distractions of technology or regular routines. When you make time for camping and nurturing relationships, you are sure to feel the health benefits!
As you can see, camping benefits all 5 of the holistic aspects of your health; physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social. To learn even more about the health benefits of camping, visit Sport Fitness Advisor, KOA, or the National Park Service!

]]>With everything that has happened this year, it would be easy to just use Amazon and allow our shopping to become a highly detached and impersonal event. However, 2020 has shown us that our actions have far reaching impacts. As this year comes to a close, the simple act of shopping small could have a positive impact on our friends, family, neighbors and community!
As stated by Harvard Business Review, businesses with fewer than 500 employees are responsible for nearly half of American jobs, and almost 44% of our GDP. In addition, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance reports that independent, locally-owned businesses are credited with fostering higher incomes and fighting income inequality, fueling job creation, generating more tax revenue, improving environmental sustainability, fostering community health and cohesion, and so much more.
However, while small businesses are an essential part of America's economy, they’re often financially fragile. A research article published in PNAS cites a survey that was conducted during March and April of this year. Their mission is to deliver new pathways of access to mind-body wellness for sectors of the public that would not have otherwise experienced it.
Founder Jacqueline Toomey is personally and wholeheartedly invested in purposefully bringing new experiences of wellness to public servants with firm hopes that the unique AXS WELLNESS approach can benefit everyone, regardless of background, career, beliefs or lifestyle.
Research has proven that at least 7 hours of quality sleep each night is necessary for overall wellbeing. Both the mind and the body need quality sleep to recover and function properly. Unfortunately, our first responders are not getting the sleep they need and it is having detrimental effects.
Sleep deprivation can have a variety of negative effects including impaired mental and physical performance, accidents and injuries, increased blood pressure, strokes, and even heart attacks. Experiencing sleep deprivation for just 1 week has been proven to lead to cognitive impairment, which makes first responder duties all the more dangerous.
In addition, research shows that first responders suffering from sleep deprivation are also at higher risk for:
That is where the First Responder Sleep Recovery Program™ comes in. This program helps combat sleep deprivation effects and offers proven sleep mitigation solutions.
Their dynamic training course includes sleep recovery practices that have been tailored for firefighters, police officers, EMS, air medics and dispatch professionals in the in the first responder community. These restorative and integrative methods for relaxation not only improve sleep patterns, but help to relieve stress and chronic trauma exposure.
GO-KOT is honored to have partnered with AXS WELLNESS. Our GO-KOTs will be used in their First Responder Sleep Recovery Program™ and will provide a durable and comfortable place to sleep for First Responders.
As stated by AXS WELLNESS, “The GO-KOT is surprisingly comfortable and lightweight, easy for transport. We also love that this company is mission driven!”
Our main goal is that we are able to enhance the First Responder Sleep Recovery Program™ and help first responders improve their sleep and overall wellbeing.
We also hope to become a staple gear item for all our first responders and help improve everyone's sleep in the first responder community. For those that may not be able to return home in between shifts, the GO-KOT can provide a comfortable and reliable place to get quality rest. For those working long shifts, such as wild-land firefighters, the GO-KOT can easily and quickly be set up for 20-30 minute naps. Short naps are proven to restore alertness, enhance performance, and reduce the risk of mistakes, and more first responders may take advantage of restful breaks if they had a place to sleep.

A wildfire is an unplanned fire that burns in a natural area such as a forest, grassland, or prairie. They can destroy homes and cause injury or death to both humans and animals. There are many different causes for wildfires, but the most common are lightning strikes and human activity.
This year, wildfires are ravaging many areas, especially in California, and red-flag warnings have been issued from the Northwest into the Rockies. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, an estimated 649,054 acres have burned across 14 states and the wildfires are still spreading. This begs the question, do you know how to prepare for wildfires? Continue reading for safety tips from the CDC and Ready.gov.
Listed below are the steps you should take to help you prepare for wildfire season:
Being prepared is key during wildfire season. You want to be aware of your surroundings, have an evacuation plan, and be ready to leave as soon as evacuation orders are given. This all ensures you have the best chance to get to safety.
Any delays could result in you getting trapped by the wildfire. If this does occur, call 9-1-1 immediately, just keep in mind that conditions may delay the rescue or make it impossible. Regardless, turn on any lights you have to help rescuers find you. For more information, visit the CDC and Ready.gov.
For those that are fighting the wildfires and keeping us save, we appreciate all the hard work you do for your communities! We would like to help support you in anyway we can. For individuals, please contact us for a first responders discount and for units and institutions we are on GSA Advantage!
]]>Back pain shouldn’t be keeping you from going camping and enjoying nature! Especially right now, when camping and other outdoor adventures are some of the only activities that allow you to socially distance your family from others. Listed below are three of the best ways to reduce back pain while camping as outlined by The Joint Chiropractic:
Sleeping on a hard, uneven surface will definitely agitate your back and intensify any back pain you might already have. So, consider bringing a memory foam mat, an air mattress or a camping cot to sleep on. The GO-KOT is an extremely comfortable option that can be set up in 60 seconds or less. Visit our page to read some of the reviews! Many of our customers across all age groups have talked about how sleeping on the GO-KOT feels like sleeping on a trampoline. It also helps cushion your back and joints regardless of the sleeping position you prefer!
Walking, hiking, kayaking and other fun activities you often do on a camping trip are a great form of exercise, but they also get your body and muscles moving in different ways than everyday life. This can cause your back pain to act up if you don’t warm up and stretch before engaging in strenuous activities.
We know it’s tempting to choose flip flops or sandals during the warmer months, but they typically offer very little support. Instead, invest in a sturdy and supportive pair of hiking shoes or sneakers. Your back, knees, and just about everything else will thank you!
Listed below are additional tips and tricks to make your camping trip more comfortable and enjoyable!

]]>Hurricane season is officially in full swing. Preparing for hurricanes and other natural disasters can already be stressful enough, but due to COVID-19, 2020 is presenting a whole new array of challenges. Don’t worry though! We’ve collected all the best tips from the CDC and Ready.gov to ensure you and your family stay safe and healthy this hurricane season.
It is a common misconception that if you are not living near the coast, you don’t need to prepare for hurricanes. However, rain, wind and water can affect even land locked states! Click here to discover your area’s hurricane risk so you can make an emergency plan.
Keep in mind that weather patterns can shift unexpectedly, and action may need to be taken abruptly. Make sure that you have an emergency plan for every location you and your family members frequent outside the home, such as the office, school, daycare, etc. Communicate this plan with every member of the household so everyone is on the same page and knows exactly what to do in an emergency. It is also a good idea to have your emergency plan accessible to everyone through a sharing platform such a OneDrive, iCloud, DropBox, etc.
Emergency plans should include where to meet if you are separated, what is being packed, the vehicle(s) and routes you will take, shelters, hotels, or family and friends homes you will stay at, the nearest hospitals and pharmacies, etc.
Due to COVID-19, some supplies may not be available right away. Start planning your Go-Bag now and give yourself enough time to obtain essentials such as toilet paper, hand sanitizer, water, shelf-stable food items, etc. Your Go-Bag should also contain at least 2 masks per person, disinfecting wipes/sprays, and any necessary medicine or prescriptions.
We understand that pets are family, which is why we want to remind you to make an emergency plan and Go-Bag for any pets you may have! For health and safety reasons, pets other than service animals are not allowed to stay at most shelters. So, be prepared to board them at a nearby vet clinic or boarding facility. These facilities require vaccine records, so make sure your pets are up to date on all vaccinations and have those records in their Go-Bag. Their Go-Bags should also have plenty of food, water, bowls, leashes, harnesses, medications, medical records, microchip information, and any other identification they have. When you are planning your route, look up pet friendly accommodations and save them along the route so you don't feel stressed about where you will stay for the night.
For more information on pet emergency plans, click here!
As you make your emergency plan, think ahead through all the phases and how COVID-19 may affect your family. Wash your hands often, use hand sanitizer, keep any frequently touched surfaces clean, maintain social distancing as much as possible, and wear your mask. From there, keep in mind that the pandemic may cause delays in the aftermath of the hurricane. Cleanup may take longer, you might not have power for awhile, and stores may not be open or restocked right away. Plan for this and have extra supplies, a generator, and a way to detect carbon monoxide.
The COVID-19 pandemic is ever changing, so it’s hard to predict what the situation will be throughout the hurricane season. This year it is especially important to stay informed, do your research and adjust your plan accordingly.
]]>Taking a trip to a national park is an incredible adventure that will have you in awe and leave you with lasting memories. Whether you have been to a national park before or this is your first time, each trip is unique and exciting. However, due to COVID-19, planning a trip to a national park this summer will be a little different.
Almost every national park made changes to adhere to the CDC COVID-19 guidelines, keeping only a few outdoor spaces and trails open. Other national parks have been closed completely for the past few months. Luckily, The National Park Service recently announced that they are slowly reopening and testing public access at a handful of major parks. As cited by The Points Guy, acting Park Service Director David Vela explained that travelers should expect “a different normal” and manage their expectations accordingly. Park visitors need to know that some areas and facilities may not be accessible.
Continue reading for our step by step guide that will help you plan your national park trip and ensure you have both a fun and safe trip this summer.
Choosing a national park to visit will take much more research this year. A great resource for getting started is FindYourPark.com. This website shares information on parks across the country and activities offered at each of them. From there, The National Park Service highly encourages you to visit each individual park’s website and social media pages to figure out what exactly is open and what you should expect upon arriving at the park.
One very important aspect in choosing a park this year will be accommodations. Many park campgrounds are not open yet, so do research on the surrounding area to make sure hotels, Airbnb’s, or other campgrounds are accepting reservations. If not, choosing a national park close by and doing a day trip may be the best option.
We cannot express enough how important it is to do your research before taking any trip! As stated by The National Park Service, during this phased reopening approach modifications to park operations will be flexible, continually evaluated, and adjusted on a park-by-park basis with the support of NPS and Department of the Interior (DOI) leadership. Because of the constantly changing situation, visitors should regularly check with individual parks for specific details about their operations, rules, and regulations throughout the planning process.
If you are considering bringing your dog, definitely check the park’s pet policies. Every park is different in terms of where dogs are allowed in the park and each have specific regulations pertaining to dogs. Some national parks have also adjusted their pet policies during the phased reopening, so even if you have visited a specific national park with your pet before, double check their current policies.
Now that you’ve picked your park and done your research, it's time to start planning your trip itinerary. Start by checkingout the “Things to Do” section (found under the “Plan Your Visit” tab on the park’s nps.gov navigation bar). The “plan Your Visit” tab has also been updated for each individual park to help assist you in planning your trip amidst COVID-19.
If you find that you have a long list of activities you want to experience on your trip, try labeling each activity as either “must see/do” and “would like to see/do.” This helps us fill up your itinerary with the most important things first. If you have extra time or flex days, that is where you can schedule in the “would like to see/do” activities.
Another helpful tip when visiting a national park is to always give yourself enough time for each activity and don’t jam pack your day(s)! For example, if a certain hike says it can be completed in 2 hours, go ahead and plan for 3 hours. That way you can stop along the way and take pictures, or just relax and enjoy the view without feeling rushed.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Well, this is true! What clothes you pack can really make or break your trip. Before packing anything, check the forecasted weather and visit the “Weather” section on the nps.gov website. Then pack accordingly.
It’s also important to be prepared for the un-forecasted weather. Pack a rain jacket or umbrella, waterproof hiking shoes, a dry bag for your cot, and a small quick-drying towel to keep you and your equipment dry. Make sure to only pack clothing that wicks away moisture. It may be chilly in the mornings and evenings, and then hot during the day, so make sure you're prepared for cool nights by sleeping off the ground on a cot with a wicking sleeping bag This important for all weather conditions, whether you need to stay cool or warm.
No matter what you plan on doing during your trip, it is always a smart idea to bring a first aid kit and extra food and water.
With everything going on, this is an incredibly important step to ensuring your trip is both fun and safe. The National Park Service encourages all visitors to follow the most recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce the spread of COVID-19. In addition, follow these tips for recreating responsibility:
For more information on planning your national park trip amidst COVID-19, check out this resource from the NPS.
]]>Every April, the National Park Service teams up with the National Park Foundation to celebrate the presidentially-proclaimed National Park Week! National Park Week 2020 will be from April 18 to April 26. The goal of this observance is to educate about the importance of national parks and the land and wildlife they protect, as well as encourage everyone to get out and explore the history, culture, and beauty of Earth’s amazing places.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, though, National Park Week will be a little different this year. Events have been canceled and most facilities are closed. While outdoor spaces in some parks are still open, for your safety and wellbeing, we recommend celebrating National Park Week digitally.
This week, parks across the country will be hosting a variety of programs that focus on digital experiences, and as always, each day will have a different theme to celebrate. Listed below are some ways you can support your parks and have a great time from the safety of your home!
When you're done touring virtually, fold up your portable cot and start planning your next trip. For more fun ideas on how you can still celebrate National Park Week, visit NPS.gov!
]]>As the coronavirus pandemic continues, we all need to be doing our part to help slow the spread of the virus. Currently, to keep ourselves and our community healthy, the CDC guidelines state to do the following:
Just about every nonessential business is closed, many community spaces, such as gyms and National Park visitors centers are closed, and all events or large gatherings have been canceled. Everyone has the phrases “social distancing” and “stay home” on their minds and many are perceiving this as "stay indoors." So, what does that mean for those who love being outdoors? Well, the good news is that the great outdoors isn’t closed and the sunshine isn’t canceled. In fact, doctors recommend you spend time in nature as long as you follow the social distancing requirements. Not only is it a good way to stay fit, but it can reduce your stress levels, make you feel a sense of reconnection and solace, and even boost your immune system.
Listed below are some ways you can get outdoors and enjoy nature! Just remember to maintain 6 feet away from others and do not do these activities in large groups.
When it comes to camping, things can get a little tricky. Many campgrounds have closed, and doctors aren’t recommending long road trips due to the numerous public rest areas and convenience store stops you will have to make.
However, the KOA is keeping an updated list of the campgrounds they still have open and many small local campgrounds have remained open with some changes and precautions. We recommend calling ahead before making any plans, but booking a campsite at a local campground (within an hour or two away) is a great way to keep supporting your community and get the chance to spend time outdoors.
While boon docking and dispersed camping adhere to the social distancing guidelines, keep in mind that every state may have different Public Health Orders affecting those activities. For example, The Southeast Utah Health Department, on March 17, 2020, issued a Public Health Order that requires overnight lodging establishments to only accept new reservations for "essential visitors." This includes everything from hotels to camping on public or private lands. However, hiking and biking on BLM land and most national parks is still possible. Circumstances are constantly changing, so it is important to do your research and call specific parks before making plans.
Overall, it is critical to make wise decisions for the health and safety of both yourself and your family. While travel and long road trips may not be recommended, you should still try to spend time outside everyday. As we discussed in a previous article, time in nature improves both your physical and mental health - something we should all be focusing on right now.
All of us are dealing with uncertainty right now. On top of that, many of us are adjusting to working from home for the first time, are not being able to see friends and loved ones, and are experiencing feelings of isolation. It is only natural that this may be causing you stress and anxiety, which means it might be hard to find the motivation to get outside. If that sounds like you, we would like to offer a solution!
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the economy, more and more pets are being surrendered to shelters. If you are able, consider fostering or adopting a furry friend! Dogs are great companions any time of the year, but the value of their companionship is made even more evident during times like this. Studies show that petting a dog reduces feelings of stress and anxiety, not to mention they are a great motivator to get outside and be active! All your extra free time can be productively used on training and you are sure to be rewarded with unconditional love and companionship! Did we mention that dogs love being outdoors? Especially camping!
If you aren’t much of a dog person, don’t worry! There are plenty of cats who need loving homes. While they may not encourage you to get out and go for a walk, they do help ease the feelings of loneliness and provide endless hours of entertainment! Click here to learn more about the benefits of fostering or adopting shelter pets!
No matter how you choose to spend this time, I think we can all agree on the importance of reconnecting with ourselves, our family and nature. Stay safe, stay well, and most importantly, rely on official sources such as the CDC or WHO for COVID-19 updates.
]]>You probably noticed that the first time you go hiking or camping for the first time, or after a long break, you feel happy, relaxed, refreshed, and just... good. It is the kind of feeling that makes you want to go every chance you get. It is the same reason just about any outdoor hobby or sport quickly becomes a passion for those who do them. Have you ever wondered why this happens though? The answer is actually quite simple! Being out in nature is proven to be good for both your mental and physical health, and overall wellbeing is what your body craves.
The number of studies determining how nature improves our wellbeing has drastically increased since 2005 after author Richard Louv coined the term “Nature Deficit Disorder.” It has now been proven that spending time in natural environments is necessary for our wellbeing. Some of the health benefits include:
While you may notice some of the above mentioned health benefits immediately after spending time in nature, a recent study discovered the exact amount of time that is needed to experience optimal wellbeing. This study, led by Mathew White of the European Centre for Environment & Human Health at the University of Exeter, included nearly 20,000 participants and focused on the amount of time they spent in green spaces. Optimal feelings of mental and physical health peaked between 200-300 minutes per week.
The study determined that individuals must spend at least 120 minutes per week in natural environments. Surprisingly, it didn’t matter how this time is accumulated over the week. It could be in bouts of 5 minutes, 20 minutes, or even the entire 120 minutes in one day. This is great news for our fellow campers and outdoor enthusiasts! If you like us and wait all week to get out and enjoy the outdoors on the weekends, you are still receiving the optimal amount of time out in nature.
Just in case you needed an excuse to be outside every weekend, now you have it! It is necessary for your health! So what are you waiting for? Grab your GO-KOT and head out to your favorite camping spot, go hit the trails, or spend some time doing your favorite outdoor activity!
]]>We have yet to visit a national park that we did not instantly fall in love with. The preserved, pristine beauty and the unique, vast landscapes that each park offers is well worth every trip! According to the National Park Service, 309 national parks do not charge entrance fees so you can visit them any day of the year for free! The other 110 parks charge an entrance fee of $5-$35 dollars. As way to encourage and motivate more individuals to get outside and explore our beautiful national parks, these 110 national parks will have 5 days this year when entrance fees are waived!
In a recent press release, The National Park Service announced which days they are waiving entrance fees in 2020! They are:
On these days, only the entrance fee is waived. It does not include any other activities, such as camping. These selected days offer visitors, volunteers and veterans the opportunity to visit the parks and truly celebrate everything they represent!
If you are passionate about National Parks and visit them often, consider getting a annual America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. It gives you unlimited entrance to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including all national parks. It only costs $80, which we think is a great deal! They do offer free or discounted passes for senior citizens, current members of the U.S. military, fourth grade students, and disabled citizens.

This makes winter a great time to get outside and explore all the fun activities this state has to offer! Listed below are some of our favorite "must do's" this season.
Obviously, camping is one of our favorite activities! We especially love camping during the winter season, though. There is just nothing better than be bundled up by the campfire, making s'mores and drinking hot chocolate! Some of our favorite camping recipes are also best made for a chilly winter evening.
Alabama has many great camping spots, including Bankhead National Forest, Cathedral Caverns State Park, Cheaha State Park, DeSoto State Park, Oak Mountain, Deerlick Creek Park, and Gulf State Park.

Again, the cooler temperatures makes fall and winter our favorite time to go hiking in Alabama! You can explore for longer periods of time without getting too sweaty or worrying about overheating. There are also less bugs and we love all the fall colors!
Our top hiking spots include: Cherokee Rock Village, Monte Sano State Park, Moss Rock Reserve, Bankhead National Forest, and Cheaha State Park! You can learn more about each one here!

Alabama might not be the first place you think about when you want to go climbing or bouldering, but this state actually has several great spots for trad and sport climbers alike! Most climbing spots here are sandstone, but a few offer a mix of sandstone and conglomerate.
Some of the best climbing spots include: Jamestown, Sand Rock, Griffin Falls, Moss Rock Preserve, and Horse Pens 40. Fall and winter are the absolute best times to visit these places! To learn more, click here!

Also, be sure to check out the Big Spring Park Ice Rink in Huntsville, AL which is open from November 15, 2019 – January 12, 2020.
Both offer a fun and active outdoor experience for adults and children alike! There are also plenty of indoor ice skating rinks all across Alabama!

This is still one of our favorite windbreakers and possibly the best one on the market. The story behind the jacket is also great. The creators were hiking a section of the Appalachian Trial, when they experienced the coldest and windiest night of their lives atop the Roan Highlands. After that night, they created The Roan, a windbreaker that will keep you sheltered in the harshest of wind gusts! For those who love the outdoors and traveling, they know how quickly the weather can turn. Help them be prepared for the windiest conditions by gifting them this windbreaker!
Click here to purchase The Roan! Be sure to check out the rest of their website as well, because all their clothing is awesome and would make a great gift!
We recently came across a YouTube channel called the Yes Theory. The group is made up of four guys: Ammar from Egypt, Thomas from France, Matt from the US and Derin from Turkey. Together, they spread the idea that life is best lived outside of your comfort zone. They encourage themselves and strangers to say yes to traveling, new adventures, making friends, trying new experiences, and overall just saying yes to getting out of your comfort zone. It is an amazing message that all fellow outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, and adventure seekers are sure to relate to and appreciate!
Their apparel line, Seek Discomfort, is not only stylish and well made, but it also helps spread the message of love and adventure! They have new arrivals every month, so be sure to check back often.

]]>November is National Veterans and Military Families Month! This month is all about honoring and expressing appreciation for the brave men and women and their families. To celebrate National Veterans and Military Families Month, GO-KOT® will be donating 10% of our proceeds to two important causes that are close to our hearts: Three Hots and a Cot and Warrior 180° Foundation.
Homeless veterans can be found on the streets of every major city and every state in our nation. The Homeless population in Birmingham, which is where Three Hots and a Cot is based out of, is currently at nearly 3,000 - of which approximately 800 are veterans. There are limited beds available for the entire homeless population and the veterans receive no special treatment.
Three Hots and a Cot was formed by veterans and their mission is to fight veteran homelessness. This is not a homeless shelter, though, it is a “Gateway to Independence.” They offer a variety of services to help military veteran’s transition from life on the streets into a self-sustained lifestyle. Since they opened in 2010, they have aided 1,194 veterans and family members with an 81% success rate!
To donate to or learn more about Three Hots and a Cot, click here!
Warrior 180° Foundation’s main goal is to help prevent Veteran suicide and raise awareness. This is a Christ centered organization that has been established to reach out to military, veterans, first responders and their families with the saving grace of Jesus Christ. They offer teaching and training in local communities, and work alongside these warriors with comfort, support, resources, hope and help for the struggles they are facing.
In addition, Warrior 180° Foundation challenges the church and communities to be faithful in supporting those who have put their lives on the line and supported our country by providing, teaching and training in their local area.
To donate to Warrior 180° Foundation or schedule an ACT Suicide Intervention Training with them, click here!
There is so much you and your community can do to support our service members and their families. Any act, big or small, goes a long way. Here are some ideas to support military veterans and their families not only this month, but all year round!
Just about any act of kindness that demonstrates your thanks and appreciation to our veterans, service members and their families is welcomed! To learn more about National Veterans and Military Families Month, click here!
]]>Let's face it, your outdoor gear isn't meant to stay clean. Camping, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, horseback riding, or anything other outdoor activity is going to coat your gear in dirt and mud. And we can bet if you bring your dogs along for the adventure, that they will eventually jump up on your GO-KOT with muddy paws!
The best outdoor gear isn't the gear that doesn't get dirty, it's the gear that is easy to clean. Luckily, cleaning your GO-KOT couldn't be more simple!
1. Look over your GO-KOT and see how dirty it is. Most of the dirt can be wiped off with a damp wash cloth.
2. For tough grass or mud stains, use a damp wash cloth and a mild soap, like Dawn. Remember to not place the soap directly on to the GO-KOT. Instead, mix the soap with water in bowl or bucket and dip the washcloth into the soapy water before scrubbing.
3. If it is not completely clean after the first wipe down, do not throw it in the washing machine! It will shrink your GO-KOT. Just wipe it down a second time and you should be good to go!
4. Always let your GO-KOT air dry after cleaning, and do not store until it is completely dry. If your GO-KOT gets soaked on your adventure, make sure to set it back up once you get home so it can dry out completely.
5. Once your GO-KOT is all clean and dry, you will be ready for your next adventure!
